With 18 minutes gone first Brooke Chapell and then Sophie Vickers forced a brilliant double save from the visiting keeper. Minutes later she was outstanding again, tipping a looping shot from Shannon Brooks onto the bar.

As the half progressed Lincoln began to come more into the game and started to pressure the home defence.

Disaster struck for SJR just before half-time when a dreadful defensive mistake allowed Lincoln a free strike and keeper Chloe Rose fumbled the ball into her own net.

SJR switched some players into different positions for the second half, which followed the same pattern as the first, with the home side pressing and creating chances but failing to convert.

Then, with 69 minutes gone, Billie Gordon floated a lovely ball into the Lincoln penalty area and captain Stacie Sands was on hand to to knock in a well deserved equaliser.

The game then became quite niggly with end to end play as SJR created enough chances to win the match but the elusive winning goal refused to come.

On 88 minutes SJR had an amazing let off when the ref ignored a blatant hand ball in the home box by a Lincoln forward and instead awarded the visitors a penalty for the subsequent collision between the attacker and Chloe Rose.

It looked like SJR had been robbed in the dying moments but the diminutive home goalie produced a brilliant save to make up for her earlier error.

But they lost their nerve in the shoot-out with a series of abysmal penalties and lost 4-1.

Next Sunday SJR travel to Cleethorpes Town Ladies for their first league match of the season, coronavirus permitting.
