Sheffield Wednesday: Team player Keiren targets top-flight

The Republic of Ireland played an instrumental role in the Owls equalling a club-record 17 clean sheets in a league campaign last term.

His outstanding form culminated in him scooping Wednesday’s player of the year award and being named in the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Championship Team of the Year.

But Westwood insists he is far more concerned about team success than personal glory.

The shot-stopper, who has recently recovered from an ankle problem, said: “It is not about my achievements. It is about the team and the club.

“I think the mandate is clear. Mr Chansiri (Owls chairman) wants promotion so it’s not about me. It is nice getting the plaudits every now and then and a pat on the back.

“But at the end of the day, if we managed to get promoted, that would outweigh any personal achievement on its own.”

Westwood sees no reason why Wednesday can’t figure in the top-six shake-up.

“We are looking to break into the top six if we can,” he said. “I think that would be a great season for us.

“If we keep doing what we are doing and pick up points, then I don’t see why we can’t be up there.

“The Championship is very tight. We have to concentrate on ourselves and keep believing in what we are doing.”
