Sheffield Wednesday: ‘New lease of life’ for wing merchant

The winger, who is in line to make his 21st Owls appearance away to Cardiff City tomorrow, joined the Hillsborough outfit on a free transfer last summer.

Wallace, who won promotion to the top flight with Sunderland and Burnley, told The Star: “I am loving it here. I’ve had a great time since coming to the club. They have given me a new lease of life coming and I’m enjoying every minute of it here.”

Just goal difference separates the Owls and seventh-placed Cardiff, who have suffered just one defeat on their own turf this season. Only promotion hopefuls Hull City have triumphed in the Welsh capital, securing a 2-0 victory back in September.

While Wallace, capped once by Scotland, is pleased Wednesday are competing in the upper echelons of the division, he is not duly concerned about gatecrashing the Championship’s top six immediately.

“It’s early days,” said Wallace, who penned a one-year contract. “We’ve got a big squad and we will keep rotating players and, hopefully, at the back end of the season, we will have a fresh team and can kick on.

“Then it will benefit us later on in the season. Some clubs will have the same players and they are going to be fatigued.

“We have got players who we can chop and change and come in and do just as good a job and keep a level performance.

“Hopefully, at the back of the season, we will see the rewards for that.”

Wednesday are still searching for their first win over a top-six side, having collected a meagre three points out of a possible 15 on offer.
