Sheffield Wednesday: Hunt apologises to Owls fans

Wednesday suffered their fifth Championship loss of the campaign in Buckinghamshire last night, losing 2-1 against the relegation-threatened Dons.

Strikes from Carl Baker and Nicky Maynard lifted Karl Robinson’s side out of the relegation zone, although Gary Hooper grabbed a late consolation for the Owls.

Defeat means Wednesday dropped to ninth in the table, four points shy of the play-off positions.

Hunt, preferred to Liam Palmer in the full-back spot, posted on Twitter: “Last night’s performance was embarrassing and huge apologies to the travelling fans.

“We have to stick together and bounce back on Sunday.”

Hooper, meanwhile, was delighted to open his Wednesday account. The striker, on loan from Norwich City, stepped up off the bench to claim his first goal of the campaign in his eighth Owls appearance.

“That’s important and that’s me off the mark,” he said. “That’s what I want to do, I want to score goals, that’s what I’ve been brought here for.”

Wednesday are back in action on Sunday when they welcome mid-table Wolves to Hillsborough and Hooper is urging his teammates to learn from the mistakes they made yesterday.

“The first half was difficult; I thought they played well but we didn’t play well,” he said.

“The gaffer made some changes and I got my first goal, we were unlucky with Fernando’s shot it was a great save, it’s just one of those nights and we have to move on.

“We didn’t start and play like I’ve seen us before but we stepped it up after half time, like we did against Cardiff when we scored twice in the second half. It didn’t happen this time.

“We started to come on stronger and it was a nice assist from Ross, I took my first goal well but it wasn’t enough we lost the game and we have to move on.”
