Sheffield Wednesday: Former Owls keeper dies aged 47

Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek has died at the age of 47, nine days after suffering cardiac arrest in the Czech Republic.

Srnicek, who spent two seasons at Hillsborough, making 52 appearances, collapsed while out running in his homeland on December 20. He was taken to Ostrava-Poruba hospital where he was placed on a life support system.

His agent, Steve Wraith, said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that I have to announce the passing of former Newcastle United player Pavel Srnicek.”

The son of a woodcutter, Srnicek, who also represented Newcastle United, Portsmouth and West Ham, earned 49 caps for his country.
