Sheffield Wednesday: Tom Lees ‘always wanted’ Owls stay

Tom Lees is determined to build something special with Sheffield Wednesday after signing a new four year deal.

The centre half yesterday pledged his future to the Owls until the summer of 2019, following several months of speculation linking him with a move away.

Acknowledging the interest, the 24-year-old says he appreciated the Wednesday hierarchy’s desire for him to stay.

And Lees says he is looking forward to exciting times ahead with the Owls.

“I sat down with the owner this wee, we talked at length and the way he spoke about the club was really encouraging,” he said. “Over four years it could be really exciting.

“The first couple of months will be a tough test for us but we have got to stay strong, stick together and then hopefully build something special.

“There’s been a fair bit of interest and speculation over the summer but the head coach and owner sat down with me about extending the length of my deal.

“I really appreciate that they’ve done that.

“It’s a long commitment from both sides and that’s why we wanted to get it right.

“I was always happy to stay here and now we can put all the speculation to bed, so it’s a fantastic.”

Yesterday was a positive day of business for the Owls with Angolan striker Lucas Joao secured on a four year deal.
