Sam Hutchinson is edging closer to a first-team return, according to Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal.

The former Chelsea youngster has sat-out Wednesday’s last four fixtures due to glandular fever. His last Owls outing came in their 3-0 success over Charlton Athletic before the final international break of the campaign.

But Carvalhal, speaking at his press briefing today ahead of Tuesday’s clash with relegation-threatened MK Dons, said: “Sam is training now. He is getting better day by day.

“The most important thing is he stays with full energies. When we feel he is 100 per cent, we will see what we do.

“We are happy because he is with us and available. We like all the players to be available. Sam is an important player for us.”

The Portuguese head coach has also confirmed Aiden McGeady and Gary Hooper are pushing hard for starting spots after recovering from hamstring and foot problems respectively.

“They are training normal,” said Carvalhal. “We have no new injuries.

“We are happy we have all the players available. We are more strong and with almost the full options to choose from.”

Wednesday, who are occupying the final play-off position, are five points clear of nearest rivals Cardiff City with four matches remaining.
