Tying skipper Glenn Loovens down to a longer contract must be a priority for the Owls.
That is the verdict of Loovens’ centre half partner Tom Lees who feels his fellow defender has done more than enough already to justify an extension to his stay at Hillsborough.
Loovens is out of contract in the summer after only signing a one year deal last year following a successful short term spell last season.
“Glenn has shown everyone what he can do this season,” Lees said. “I don’t think he needs to do much more in terms of talking about it.
“It’d be a loss if we didn’t tie him down so for me, it’s a straight-forward thing to do.
“We’ll just have to see what happens. Anyone going into the last six months of their contract will want to know what is going on for a bit of security, to put their mind at rest
“Hopefully we can tie him down because he’s been a really good captain for us.”
Lees’ own future has been the subject of speculation after starring since joining from Leeds last August.
The defender was linked with a £3million switch to Sunderland this month but admits he is unsure where the speculation has come from.
He said: “I’m not sure where stories come from. It just seems to be the case that when January comes round, people jump on the internet and think about what stories they can write.”
