Owls boss Stuart Gray has welcomed the club’s decision to appoint an experienced European scout.

The mid-table Championship outfit are looking to bring in a ‘Director of International Recruitment’ as they seek to mount a serious promotion challenge next season.

The role will include scouting and reporting of overseas matches, developing relationships with foreign clubs and associations and assisting Wednesday’s football operations. Whoever the club decides to hire, Gray has spoken of the importance of recruiting unearthed gems.

He told The Star: “Hopefully the person who comes in will have the knowledge to help me bring two or three players in from abroad.

“We know all the players in England but the problem is cost. Unless a player is on a free transfer or a loan signing, they cost a lot of money. We all want a bargain.”

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri has indicated he wants to bring in a director of football to oversee the day-to-day running of the club. Damien Comolli was recently linked with the position last week.

Gray claims the director of football, along with a European scout, will help him tap into the overseas market but insists he will have the final say on transfers.
