Sheffield Wednesday beat the transfer deadline to sign defensive midfielder Filipe Joaquim Melo Silva from Portugese side Moreirenses for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.
The 25-year-old, known as ‘Melo’ in Portugal, has signed a three-and-a half-year contract at Hillsborough. He becomes the Championship club’s fourth signing on transfer deadline day following the arrivals of Sergiu Bus, Marnick Vermijl and Lewis McGugan.
Melo, who began his career with Uniao Lamas, has played for Moreirense since 2013, skippering the club to the Portugese top tier last season.
Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, who purchased a 100% stake in Wednesday last week, has also helped finance the loan additions of Lewis Baker and Will Keane in recent weeks.
