Vincent Sasso’s assured displays at the heart of the Owls’ rearguard may have taken some Wednesdayites by surprise - but not his boss.

The Frenchman has performed admirably since the turn of the year following a rocky start to his career at Hillsborough, helping Wednesday record two clean sheets in their last five outings.

Having shrugged off a knee problem, Sasso, on a season long-loan deal from Braga, is determined to carry on impressing and earn a permanent move.

His steady, solid performances have caught the eye of head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who usually prefers to focus on the collective, rather than individuals.

Gritty Wednesday made of stern stuff

Carvalhal, who is without centre-backs Michael Turner (knee) and Tom Lees (hamstring), told The Star: “Vincent has done well. He is someone I know well from Portugal.

“He was not completely fit at the beginning. But now Vincent is playing well and understands our defensive process really well.

“It’s not a surprise to me how he’s playing. We knew he was a good a player and he’s doing very well.”
