Sheffield Wednesday: Owls ace vows to put Antonio friendship on hold

The friendship between Liam Palmer and Michail Antonio will be put on hold for 90 minutes at the City Ground on Saturday.

Having played alongside Antonio for two and a half years at Hillsborough, Palmer has nothing but admiration for the Nottingham Forest forward.

Indeed, Antonio has flourished since joining Forest, for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £1.5m, last August, hitting 10 goals in 27 starts.

But Palmer, an ever present for the Owls this season, is determined to nullify Antonio’s threat and help Wednesday claim a third successive Championship victory.

He told The Star: “I know Michail [Antonio] well. I keep in touch with him every now and again.

“It’s always good to see someone who you have played with. I’ve got no doubt there will be a few one on one battles between us during the game but I just hope to come out on top of them.”

Although he is considered a Forest legend, having spent 12 years at the club as a player, manager Stuart Pearce is under pressure to rectify their dismal form. Forest have won just twice in their last 19 matches in all competitions and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Rochdale last weekend,

Palmer said: “We’ve got nothing to fear. We played them at our place and felt we should have at least taken the draw, if not won the game.

“They’ve got some really good players and if they all come together on the day they can be a force. But we’re six points off the play-offs so we will see what happens.”

*Wednesday’s home tussle with Birmingham City, scheduled to take place on Saturday January 24, has been rearranged for Tuesday January 27, kick-off 7.45pm, due to the Blues’ FA Cup progress.
