The next boss of Sheffield Wednesday faces a daunting task to win promotion to the Premier League.

That is the verdict of former Owls manager Brian Laws who is expecting another highly competitive season ahead in the Championship

And the 53-year-old says whoever takes over at Hillsborough has a tough task if he holds hopes of competing at the top end of the division.

“Sheffield Wednesday, due to the financial constraints on the club for the last decade and longer, have always been at the bottom end of the Championship,” Laws told the Press Association.

“They had the spell in League One and since getting back out I think they have over-achieved because of the budget successive managers have had to work with.

“It’s impossible to get the club out of that and to compete under those circumstances, you only have to look at the big budgets they have been competing against.

“Next season Hull and Burnley will be looking to get straight back up and QPR especially will have a huge war chest.

“So it’s not going to be easy for whoever comes in.

“It’s probably a bad time to get out of the division - there are some big clubs there who will be spending a frightening amount of money.”
