Fernando Forestieri, the Owls’ big-money summer signing from Watford, has been backed to lead the Championship club to a much-needed victory at home to Fulham this weekend.

Despite producing two eye-catching performances in Wednesday’s recent away clashes at Burnley and Bolton Wanderers, the Argentinian-born striker is still waiting to open his goal-scoring account.

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal claimed the 25-year-old, a £3m purchase from the Hornets, visibly tired in the closing stages of Tuesday’s goalless draw at Bolton.

Nonetheless, Carvalhal believes Forestieri possesses the flair and imagination to help Wednesday get back to winning ways following six-match winless streak in the second-tier of English football.

The Portuguese chief said: “Fernando [Forestieri] played much better in the last match (Burnley) but he didn’t play at the same level against Bolton.

“He has only started to play in the last couple of games and started to feel tired the other night. We believe that he is one player who in a second can solve a game which is why we played him for 90 minutes.

“We must push Fernando. We believe he will do better in the future and that he can really make the difference and we can score goals with him.

“He will have a few days to rest before Saturday and I believe he will much better with our fans and play much better.”

Carvalhal plunged Michael Turner into action for the first time at the Macron Stadium. The experienced centre-back, on a season long-loan deal from Norwich, delivered an assured performance as Wednesday recorded their third shut-out of the campaign.

“Michael did very well,” he said. “I’m very happy with him as I am with all the players.

“It was the first time Michael had played in a long time but his partnership with Tom Lees was good.

“In any collective, when we change the players, usually they have a good connection and understand each other because we have a way of playing.”
