Versatile defender Vincent Sasso is itching to get started after completing his move to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls strengthened their backline by capturing the 24-year-old on a season-long loan deal from Portuguese outfit Sporting Clube de Braga yesterday.

Sasso, who can be deployed at right-back or centre-back, passed a medical on Monday and, should he impress, Wednesday have an option to make the transfer permanent. He is contracted to Braga until 2017.

The Frenchman posted on Twitter: “I guess it’s now official! Really happy and proud to join @swfc. Thanks for all the messages, can’t wait to start this adventure!”

Sasso joined Braga in the summer of 2012 from fellow Portuguese club Beira Mar after leaving Nantes the previous January. But he struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot at Braga, making just 28 appearances and scoring two goals. He played just five times last season, including two outings as a substitute.

Sasso, who has represented France at youth level from Under-16s through to the U21s, is in contention to face his former club later this month as the Owls are set to lock horns with Braga in a pre-season friendly as part of their five-day warm-weather training in Portugal. The Owls fly out to the Algarve on Wednesday, July 22, and face Braga two days later in a warm-up match at Albufeira.

The transfer window officially re-opens today, but Sasso is the Owls’ second summer recruit. Towering centre-back Darryl Lachman was snapped up from FC Twente last week.

It will be interesting to see where Wednesday’s new management team decide to select Sasso. The defender’s preferred position is thought to be right-back and Wednesday already have two recognised players in that area in the shape of Liam Palmer, who has recovered from a serious ankle injury, and Marnick Vermijl, recruited from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee last February.
