Fernando Forestieri has hit back at Leeds chairman Massimo Cellino’s accusations he lacked the “right mentality” to play for the club.

It is believed the Italian striker came close to joining the Whites before completing his £3m switch to Wednesday at the end of last month.

Celino claimed Leeds ended their interest in Forestieri because he failed to show the “hunger and desire” to move to Elland Road.

Regarding Cellino’s comments, the 25-year-old said: “If you do not feel good to go to this club, maybe you don’t have a good mentality because you are not happy with this club. I come here [Wednesday] and I have a good mentality because I really want to come here and not there.

“I think he said: ‘he does not have a good mentality to come here’ because I do not feel good and confident in this club.’

“But forget Leeds, I am happy here.”

Forestieri said Watford’s owners informed his agent he was free to go find another club a week before the start of the new Premier League season. The ex-Udinese player insists Leeds only got in contact with his representatives after Owls had expressed their interest in him.

He stressed: “No-one from Leeds spoke to me or my agent.

“To the Leeds fans I like to say sorry because everyone followed me on Twitter and they were disappointed with me. But it was not my fault.

“I saw Twitter and a thousand or so many follow me from Leeds and say: ‘Ah, you w*****’. I am very sorry for the Leeds fans. In the beginning, not to speak with me or my agent was bad, I didn’t like this.”
