New winger Will Buckley could make his first appearance in Wednesday colours tonight when they travel to Cambridge United in the first round of the EFL Cup.
Buckley, recruited on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Sunderland last Friday, was left out of the match-day squad for the Owls’ victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.
Head coach Carlos Carvalhal has defended his decision to not play Buckley, who has previously played for Watford and Brighton and Hove Albion, in their league opener.
Carvalhal said: “It was easy to decide that Will couldn’t be involved because he only trained once with us.
“When you receive a player, you can’t play him after one session.
“Will doesn’t know his colleagues and we don’t know him really well yet.
“Sometimes if you put a stranger on to the pitch, maybe you can lose a game with one or two decisions.
“With time, Will will be okay. We will see if he is in physical condition to play (at Cambridge).”
Wednesday are set to make a raft of changes for their first trip to Cambridge in 18 years. Keiren Westwood, Jack Hunt, Sam Hutchinson, Daniel Pudil, Ross Wallace, Barry Bannan, Almen Abdi, Kieran Lee and Fernando Forestieri are all likely to be rested.
