Rhys McCabe bagged a brace as Owls Under-21s cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at their Middlewood Road training ground this afternoon.
The midfielder, who may be allowed to leave Hillsborough on a temporary basis before the loan window shuts on Thursday, opened the scoring after 15 seconds following a goalkeeping howler by Dilon Philips.
Freddy Tracey and Jack Stobbs had efforts kept out by Philips as Wednesday’s second-string side, featuring Lewis Buxton and Dejan Kelhar, shaded the first half.
Charlton could have equalised two minutes after the re-start but Regan Charles-Cook blazed over following a neat corner routine. Harry Lennon also steered a shot when well-placed after a lovely more on the left flank.
McCabe made them pay for their profligacy in the 66th minute as he converted Stobbs’ inviting delivery.
Substitute Warren Clarke almost a grabbed a third late on but coach Lee Bullen was delighted with their performance.
He told The Star: “I’m delighted with the result and clean sheet. We had a lot of good performances and it was great to get three or four scholars on the park to give them that experience.
“I’m pleased too for the three senior boys Dejan, Lewis and Rhys, who all got 90 minutes under their belts.”
Owls: Wildsmith; Buxton, De Havilland, Kelhar, Floro (Beatson 60); McCabe, Sanders (Penney HT), Croasdale, Stobbs; Tracey (Clarke 64), Meadows. Substitutes: McDonagh, Brown.
