Midfielder Jose Semedo could return for Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship clash at Derby this weekend, manager Stuart Gray has revealed.

Gray revealed the Portuguese was “touch and go” to face Steve McClaren’s promotion-chasing Rams, who bounced back from 3-1 down to win a point against Rotherham on Tuesday evening.

Semedo was withdrawn after 34 minutes of Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Brighton last weekend, and has been struggling with an ankle/toe infection.

“Jose is touch and go,” Gray said.

“He’s wearing a boot which is taking the pressure of his ankle. We can’t seem to get the swelling down. He’s on a course of antiobiotics so he will be touch and go for Saturday.

“It’s disappointing for Jose because he is a big loss for us. For him to not be able to carry on until half-time, we know he’s got a problem.”

Skipper Glenn Loovens needs ankle surgery after picking up an injury in training next week, but Will Keane’s injury is not as serious as first feared and the on-loan Manchester United man resumed training on Tuesday.

“Glenn is going to have surgery... they are going to pin it which is bad news for Glenn and us,” Gray added.

“We are looking at a six to eight week period off. But these things happen in football. It’s part and parcel of the game. It’s disappointing for us but we have to get on with it.

“It’s better news on Will, though. He left the ground on Saturday in a brace but suddenly he was able to train with us on Tuesday so that was great news for us. It was just bruising.”

Chris Maguire is available again for Gray’s side after completing a two-match suspension.
