Gary Madine is on the brink of joining Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Bolton Wanderers.
The striker, released by the Owls just over a fortnight ago, is expected to become Wanderers’ first summer signing in the next few days.
Madine, a key performer in Wednesday’s promotion-winning team in 2012, played 13 times in all competitions for Stuart Gray’s side last season, but made just one league start. His solitary strike came in their Capital One Cup victory over Notts County.
The 24-year-old, who moved to Hillsborough from Carlisle United, netted 28 goals in 113 Owls outings.
Bolton chief Neil Lennon is seeking to bolster his forward options, having recently let former Barnsley and Chesterfield striker Craig Davies leave while there are still question marks over Eidur Gudjohnsen and Emile Heskey’s futures.
