Former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Royston Drenthe is expected to join a club in China this month.

The Dutch forward, who spent the first half of the season at Hillsborough, making 15 appearances, hitting one goal, returned to his parent club Reading last week.

Owls head coach Stuart Gray tried to extend Drenthe’s loan deal but the ex-Real Madrid star appears to have decided to head to the Far East to continue his footballing odyssey.

Reading boss Steve Clarke said: “The club called him back from Sheffield Wednesday because there’s an opportunity for Royston to get another move.

“It’s progressing but until it actually happens it’s only speculation so we’ll have to wait and see.

“But it looks in all probability that he’ll be going somewhere else for the second half of the season.

“If it comes off then it will be permanent.”

Clarke declined to confirm which club Drenthe is on the verge of joining, insisting: “It’s up to the club and the representatives of Royston Drenthe to come to a satisfactory conclusion for all parties.”
