Carlisle United boss Keith Curle has expressed his desire to prolong Matt Young’s stay at Brunton Park.

The 21-year-old full-back, who is still waiting to make his senior debut for the Owls, is set to return to Hillsborough on February 10 following the expiry of his one-month loan deal.

But Curle is determined to keep a hold of Young, who has picked up two cautions in his three starts for the League Two strugglers.

He said: “The Matt Young situation has been handed to John Nixon (Carlisle’s managing director) now because he’s one we would be happy to keep.”

With Lewis Buxton having now resumed full training following his latest injury problem, it is likely Wednesday would allow Young to remain at Carlisle. Buxton is edging closer to a first-team comeback, having played an hour of the Owls’ development match against Barnsley on Monday. The experienced defender will shortly be aiming to oust Liam Palmer in the right-back position.

Buxton could be included on the substitutes bench versus Reading along with Sam Hutchinson, who has served his one-match suspension following his dismissal against Bolton Wanderers.

More than 2,000 Owls supporters are expected to cheer on Stuart Gray’s charges at 18th-placed Reading as they seek to get back to winning ways after collecting just one point from back-to-back home matches.
