Carlos Carvalhal has expressed his delight over how quickly Spanish midfielder Alex Lopez has adapted to life in the Championship.

Lopez, signed on a season long-loan deal from Celta Vigo last month, has been plunged straight into English football, starting both of Wednesday’s two matches this season.

The 27-year-old has already contributed two assists from dead ball situations and should have opened his Owls goal-scoring account in their opening-day victory over Bristol City.

Lopez is an intelligent footballer and possesses the vision and passing range to unlock defences.

Carvalhal told The Star: “Alex [Lopez] has adapted very well and shown a lot of quality.

“He is a player with good technical ability who runs and fights a lot. It is very normal for him to control a game.

“I had an idea Alex might have difficulties. I didn’t expect he would adapt so quickly to English football but it is not a big surprise how well he has done.”

As well as expressing a desire to have two players fighting it out per position, Carvalhal has repeatedly stressed the importance of having a British core in the Owls’ quest to be successful in the second-tier. The spine of Wednesday’s team consists of experienced, proven Championship performers.

“The main group is British; they are the soul of the club,” said Carvalhal. “We are creating a very good atmosphere inside the team.”
