Boss Carlos Carvalhal is excited about the young talent coming through Wednesday’s academy.

Defenders Jack Lee and Connor O’Grady, winger Jack Stobbs and striker George Hirst have all featured in the Championship club’s opening two pre-season friendlies.

As he demonstrated in his first season at the helm with goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, Carvalhal has no qualms over giving youngsters a chance to stake their claim.

“It is about quality, not their age,” he stressed. “If they have quality, they can play.

“We are improving the academy. We have three players at the moment who we believe that in the future will play in the first-team. When I say the future, maybe two to three years.

“A lot of things are changing at the club. I’m very happy because I’m in the centre of the project.”

As things stand, Carvalhal’s top priority is strengthening his first-team options. He is targeting two players per position.

He conceded: “At the moment, we don’t have a balanced team. We don’t have a left-back for example.

“With Glenn Loovens’ injury, we also don’t have an alternative centre-half.

“I’m happy with the players we have here but we want more internal competition. It is important that nobody sleeps.

“We have gaps in the team so we must cover them as soon as possible.”
