Sheffield Wednesday know full well how cup performances can affect league form after last season’s 7-0 demolition at Manchester City.
After competing well in the first half of their Capital One Cup third round tie at the Etihad, the Owls were blitzed out of sight by the defending Premier League champions.
Wednesday failed to win any of their subsequent ten matches, though players and coaching staff refused to blame the City drubbing for the difficult run.
As they prepare to host Oxford United in the Capital One Cup tonight, Jose Semedo is urging his Owls team mates to make sure the early season positivity is not derailed by what would be a surprise defeat.
“It is a game that we want to win and take a lot of positives from,” Semedo told the Star.
“It is a game that can damage you if you don’t get a positive result.
“It is always good to get that winning mentality whoever you play.”
The Portuguese midfielder is also keen for Wednesday to maintain the positive mood at Hillsborough with another home victory.
Wednesday have won two and drawn one of their three home games so far this term and look well placed to improve on their six Hillsborough victories from last season.
Semedo said: “We want to improve our home form from the last couple of years.
“Our fans have been amazing and shown tremendous patience.
“We get fantastic support and I hope they keep getting behind us.
“That can only help the team and the club get to where we want.
“We have made a good start to the season.
“I know we can do better and will do in the next two to three games.
“When you makes as many changes as we have, sometimes that goes against you but what we know is we have made a very positive start and can only go better.”
