Sheffield Wednesday: Captain defends card-happy Hutchinson

Skipper Glenn Loovens has repeatedly told Owls teammate Sam Hutchinson to clean up his act this season.

The problem is the big Dutchman’s words keep failing to have the desired effect.

Former Chelsea youngster Hutchinson is the most booked player in the Championship, having chalked up 10 cautions in 15 outings.

On the defensive midfielder’s poor disciplinary record, Loovens joked: “I try to have a word every game with Sam but it has not helped so far!”

Hutchinson sat-out the Owls’ come-from-behind victory over Huddersfield Town last weekend, serving the first of a two-match suspension. It is his second ban of the campaign and he will also miss the trip to mid-table Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Although they got back to winning ways in the league, Wednesday missed Hutchinson’s steel and energy in the middle of the park.

Centre-back Loovens, who has expressed an interest in spending the rest of his career at Hillsborough, told The Star: “Sam is a very aggressive player and that’s what makes him the player he is.

“Of course, sometimes he goes into a challenge where you think ‘that’s not the smartest thing to do!’”

Loovens, though, does have some sympathy for his teammate, saying: “I didn’t start great last season, picking up five out of five in the league and then I only got a couple after that so sometimes it shows you can be a bit unlucky.”
