Sheffield Wednesday blog: Owls should be in the play-offs this season

Carlos Carvalhal has made a big impression so far at Sheffield Wednesday after the signings he has made this summer.

Carvalhal has strong ambitions to take Wednesday into the Premier League, with big money signings Lucas Joao and Marco Matias coming to Hillsborough from Portuguese side Nacional.

The Owls poor form in front of goal last year hasn’t gone unnoticed by Carvalhal, who has made a statement with these two big signings, which will hopefully make the Yorkshire side a top six Championship team in the not so distant future.

Matias signed in an undisclosed fee rumoured to be around three million euros. He was the second highest Portuguese goal scorer last season with 17 goals for Nacional.

With new arrivals also coming in like wingers Alex Lopez and Ross Wallace and midfielders Filipe Melo and Lewis McGugan, he has got some strength in depth.

There is also quality at the back with the new signings of FC Twente centre half Darryl Lachman as well as full-backs Vincent Sasso and Jack Hunt.

Lewis Price has signed as the no.2 Behind Kieron Westwood in goal.

There are rumours that Charlton full-back Rhoys Wiggins and Marseille Winger Modou Songou are on the verge of signing for the Owls in the next few days.

The Owls finished the preparation for the new season with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Scottish side St Mirren after a few new players shined like Wallace with a few assists and a goal from Sasso.

Can this be the season Wednesdayites start believing in getting back to the promise land after a 15 year absence?

With the signings made most Wednesday fans will expect a good push for the play-offs this season.
