Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough has paid tribute to his side’s mental strength as they seek their fourth successive away win at Crawley this weekend.

United strengthened their grip on the League One promotion places on Tuesday night with a 2-1 away win at Rochdale, thanks to goals from Marc McNulty and John Brayford.

That result extended their unbeaten run to five games - including four wins - and took them to within ten points of second-placed MK Dons, with a game in hand.

And Clough said: “We’re starting to see that mental toughness and spirit come through from the group now, which is pleasing at this vital stage of the season.

“There are 15 games left now and the togetherness of the group is starting to shine through.

“You can see the will to win, and the desire in the boys.

“If you come to places like Rochdale, tough places to come, and show any weakness at all, they will seize on it and put you under pressure.

“But we didn’t; we were good from the first whistle, got the early goal and then doubled it, before working very hard to keep it.

“So that’s a good sign for us.”

This weekend, United go to third-bottom Crawley looking for their fourth successive away win but Clough warned: “That will be another really tough game.”
