Oldham Athletic could task Dominic Poleon and Jacob Mellis with stalling Sheffield United’s push for the play-offs when their former club visits SportsDirect.com Park this weekend.
But Dean Holden, the Athletic manager, again expects leading goalscorer Jonathan Forte to miss Saturday’s match which pits fifth versus 13th in the League One table.
Both Poleon and Mellis appeared as substitutes during Monday’s defeat at Crawley Town and Holden said: “We threw Dom on down there and he had a bit of joy. It was also nice to see Jacob out there again.”
Forte, aged 28, spent four years at Bramall Lane after graduating from United’s youth system in 2003 before returning, albeit on loan, in 2013. Poleon moved to South Yorkshire on a temporary basis during the same campaign while Mellis commanded a £1m fee when he swapped United’s academy for Chelsea in 2007.
Athletic are 10 points adrift of the top six but Holden said: “I don’t believe in chucking in the towel. Are we in the hunt at the moment? No.
“But equally, a couple of results get you back knocking on the door. We have plenty to play for.”
