Sheffield United are still negotiating a new contract with Diego De Girolamo, writes James Shield.
Manager Nigel Clough confirmed the Italy youth international, who has been named in the squad for today’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Preston North End, remains in talks with the club’s hierarchy over a proposed extension to his present deal.
Clough told The Star: “We’re still talking with Diego. Nothing has been agreed yet.
“But, yes, he will be travelling with the rest of the lads to Deepdale. He’s in the party for that game.”
De Girolamo, who recently returned from a loan spell at York City, will become a free agent this summer unless United exercise a 12 month option they inserted into his terms of employment three years ago.
Speaking earlier this month Clough, whose side host Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final on Wednesday, said: “We’ve got that clause but, ideally, that’s not a route we really want to go down. We’d much rather just get everything tied down and sorted out.”
