Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough has warned tonight’s result between Rochdale and Leyton Orient, which could see his team qualify for the League One play-offs, must not change its approach against the Londoners this weekend, writes James Shield.

With nine points separating them from Keith Hill’s seventh-placed side, United will enter their penultimate match of the campaign assured of a top six finish if the visitors avoid defeat at Spotland.

But Clough said: “Whatever happens there, whether we go to Orient having to take something from the game to make sure of things or not, we can’t alter our mind-set. It won’t make any difference to how we go about our work which is in a positive manner and making every effort to win that game.

“No matter what the circumstances, we always step out onto that pitch with the same intention. And that is to give everything, regardless of who is playing, to come out on top.”

United remained fifth in the table despite being held to a draw by Bradford City three days ago. Clough’s directive, ahead of their trip to the Matchroom Stadium, is designed to ensure his squad remains focused and also protect the integrity of a division where Orient find themselves battling against relegation.

“We’re taking nothing for granted,” Clough said. “Because nothing is decided yet.

“As far as we are concerned, we have to go out there and take maximum points from our two games. Even if, mathematically we don’t, that’s what aim to do.”
