Sheffield United’s Chris Morgan has paid tribute to former boss John Carver, after Newcastle were confirmed as the opponents for Morgan’s Blades testimonial in July.

Carver was a coach at United under Gary Speed, before taking the reigns on a caretaker basis when Speed left to take the Wales job.

Carver led Newcastle to Premier League safety last term, and the Magpies will now travel to Bramall Lane on Sunday, July 26, kicking off at 1pm.

Former skipper Morgan, now a member of the club’s coaching team, has been a keen supporter of local charities during his time at Bramall Lane and will donate funds from the game to three very worthy local organisations.

“It promises to be a brilliant fixture and one that should benefit both clubs in pre-season preparations, in addition to three really important local charities,” Morgan, who joined United from Barnsley in the summer of 2003, said.

“But it wouldn’t have been possible without the massive help of JC and Lee Charnley [Newcastle United’s managing director] who, despite having more important things on their minds in recent weeks, have stuck to their word about going ahead with the fixture if Newcastle preserved their top-flight status.

“They are touring the USA and their fixture against us will be their first back on English soil upon their return so I am sure, like they always do, their fans will come down from the north-east in large numbers.

“For us, it will give the new manager a chance to experience Bramall Lane as the home Gaffer before the season starts in August and it will be an important occasion with that in mind.”
