Sheffield United are poised to lodge a second bid for Eoin Doyle before Monday’s transfer deadline, writes James Shield.

As The Star first revealed last month, the Chesterfield centre-forward features among Nigel Clough’s leading targets after scoring 24 goals in 32 appearances this term.

United, who are expected to include new signings John Brayford, Paul Coutts and Kieron Freeman in the squad which hosts Swindon Town tomorrow, first enquired about the possibility of recruiting Doyle over the Christmas period.

Although that approach was rebutted by the Proact Stadium’s board of directors, Clough is expected to intensify his interest after being informed that Chris O’Grady will not be allowed to leave Brighton and Hove Albion until the end of the season at the earliest.

United enter their meeting with the League One leaders 18 points off the automatic promotion pace but delivered a statement of intent by spending £1.5m to acquire Brayford’s services six days ago.

“We’ve got Swindon and they’re at the top,” the former Cardiff City defender said. “But we’ve got two games in hand so, if we beat them and win those, then it’s down to nine.

“That’s nowhere near enough, at this stage, to write anyone off.

“If you don’t believe you can do something, if you don’t try to do it, then there’s no way you’ll achieve.”

“The lads who are already here, it’s one hell of a team,” he added. “We won 10 in a row last season and we can do it again. The capability, if everything clicks, is here.

“If we can do that, go on the same type of run, then people are going to start checking over their shoulders.”
