Sheffield United have paid tribute to a supporter who is scheduled to run the Plusnet Yorkshire Half-Marathon later this month in an effort to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Martin White, who has twice beaten the disease, plans to complete the event alongside his oncologist Dr Matt Winter and is being backed by the League One club after meeting co-owner Kevin McCabe last weekend.

“We are delighted to be helping profile Martin’s fantastic efforts to help the people who have helped him,” McCabe said.

White, who is a season ticket holder on the Kop, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma aged 17 and underwent surgery followed by radiotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital. Twenty-five years later, in September 2013, he was diagnosed with breast cancer which had also spread to his lymph nodes. Again, White’s treatment was a success.
