Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has admitted he will be forced to make changes for tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at Fleetwood Town.

Midfielders Chris Basham, Paul Coutts and Che Adams are all set to miss the Northern Area quarter-final after sustaining injuries during last weekend’s FA Cup victory over Worcester City.

Adkins, who confirmed the trio are undergoing treatment at the club’s training complex, said: “Those three lads came off so that suggests there is an issue there. But we’ve got lads coming back to fitness too so this is a good opportunity for them to stake a claim.”

Defender John Brayford, who has not made an appearance since May, is making progress in his battle to overcome a knee injury but will not be named in the squad which meets Steven Pressley’s side. James Wallace and Jay McEveley are thought to have resumed training after spells in the treatment room but it remains unclear whether Adkins will select them for the visit to Highbury.

“There will be changes, yes, because as I’ve explained, we’ve got people looking to come back,” Adkins said. “And we want them to be involved. We want them to stake claims and make the most of the opportunity. It’s vitally important people look to do that.”

“We want to win the game, no question, and if people do well here then it puts them in good stead for the league games. They can force themselves in, without doubt, by doing well.”
