Nigel Clough admitted he felt a mixture of pain and pride after watching his team’s heroic Capital One Cup campaign end in cruel fashion at the semi-final stage.

The Blades gave Tottenham a huge scare when, trailing to Christian Eriksen’s free-kick, teenage substitute Che Adams scored twice in as many minutes to turn the second leg on its head.

But Eriksen dashed United’s hopes of taking to contest extra-time by completing his own brace with less than two minutes left.

Clough said: “The over-riding feeling is disappointment but, at the same time, absolute pride.

“Pride in the players, pride in the supporters and pride in everyone else because they couldn’t have given more.”

“To push Spurs so close is something else. But that’s why it’s so painful. Because we came so close.”

Adams joined United, beaten 1-0 at White Hart Lane seven days earlier, from Ilkeston last year and thrilled the 30,236 crowd by cancelling-out Eriksen’s opener before pouncing again soon after.

Clough heaped praise on the youngster - “We hope he’ll be the talk of Sheffield United not only tonight but for a long time to come” - before adding: “I think we’ve shown everyone we’re a club on the up.

“To achieve what these lads have - and we’re still in the FA Cup - is remarkable and now we’ve got to harness that in the league.”

Clough thanked Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino for “showing a huge amount of respect.”

Repaying the compliment Pochettino, whose side now face Chelsea at Wembley, said: “I wish them all the best for the future because they deserve even more success.

“I was very happy to meet Nigel and his staff because they are great people and a great team.”
