And the Tigers boss has had his frustration compounded with the loss of a centre-half before the season has even begun.

But Shaw insists the pre-season has allowed him to settle on the side he wants to start against FC United of Manchester on 17th August.

Speaking to the Guardian, after a sixth friendly loss in a row, he said: “It’s been a disappointing pre-season.”

“Results wise it’s been very disappointing, but in terms of looking at players and what they can do it’s been great.”

“Getting pipped by the odd goal by teams and not getting results has been a pain but we’re getting individuals prepared for how we want them to play.”

“I’m not a very good loser.”

He has, however, had to come to terms with losing centre-half Josh Hill.

“He’s relocating to London, and he can’t commit to the travel.”

“It’s massively disappointing, we cherry picked him as a young player with a lot of potential.”

One a positive note, however, Shaw believes he has his strongest side in mind.

“I’ve got in my head the nine to 11 players who will start against FC United and I’m happy with that.”

“So it’s all guns blazing for the start of the season.”
