Shaw delighted with FA Cup win to start the season

His side huffed and puffed and came under pressure from the side from the division below, before winning quite comfortably at Sandy Lane.

“I think the last time we got through was in my first season here,” he said.

“Good for the supporters, good for me because it’s never been a great competition for me at any club I’ve been at.

“If we can get a bit further on, get a bit of money for the club, get the people in.”

Tigers started well but still found themselves 1-0 down at the break.

They took control after the break but were pegged back to 2-2 midway through the second half.

Shaw said: “I was happy with the first 30 minutes I thought we were in complete control, they showed us a lot of respect, probably too much at first.

“We started to look like we would get in behind, they didn’t look like they were going to hurt us and then we stopped doing what we were doing.

“They got the ball down the side, a bit of skill, Ross misses his tackle and we’re 1-0 down.

“At half-time I told them to get back to the gameplan and the second half was a lot better, we probably could have won 6-3.

“We did make hard work of it.”

One negative was the first half departure of centre-half Ross Henshaw who hobbled off after failing to run off an injury.

His loss wasn’t too keenly felt however, thanks to the personel in Shaw’s back line.

He’s pleased with the squad that has come together.

“Ross jarred his knee in a tackle, but we’ve got Kieran Fenton at left-back who can play centre-half, so we can move things around and he fitted in very well.

“We’ve got a midfield that’s growing, they’re very young, it’s a new midfield we’re trying to put together.

“Scott Wesley’s first competitive game for us, in front of a big crowd, I think he was trying too hard, but they did a job.

“Hallam are a good team, worked hard, I was pleased with the way we attacked.”

The game was lit up by a great goal from Adam Scott, who left several Hallam players in his wake before taking it past the keeper to score.

Shaw hopes to see more of the same from the forward.

“It just shows the kind of threat he’s going to pose this season. I’ve been looking for players who can run with the ball and can drive us on, attack players with pace. If he continues to develop, he’ll be a great player for us this year.”

And Tigers fans could be in for another season full of entertainment.

Shaw added: “The fans are going to see lots of goals, we’re working hard on the defensive side but we’re entertaining and I’m trying to make us worth the money.

“Bring on the football season now, it’s a good way to start the season.”
