Senior players take share of blame for Simon Clark’s exit from Worksop Town

Tigers parted ways with Clark and his assistant Dave Frecklington on Monday, following their failure to reach to reach the play-offs this season.

Chairman Jason Clark released a statement revealing that the duo had offered their resignations.

But midfielder Matt Young said the players had to ‘hold up their hands’ and admit they had not been good enough in recent weeks, as Tigers’ promotion push faltered.

“We are the ones who have cost him his job,” Young told the Guardian. “We have shown at times this season what we are capable of but have not been consistent enough.”

Fellow midfielder Steve Towers said: “It is disappointing to lose the manager. Obviously results haven’t been good enough and as players we have to take a lot of responsibility for that.”

“I feel sorry for him because he put a lot of time and effort in which we appreciated as players.”

But Towers said he was hopeful that the club could move forward whoever replaces Clark at Sandy Lane.

“There are a lot of very good players at the club so whoever it is they will have some decent people to work with.”

Young said he also expected his former manager to be back in football before long.

“He was a really good coach, and excellent at getting his point across to us as players,” Young said.

“I can see him going on to manage at a higher level and would make a really good professional coach.”
