Rotherham need more options up front

Rotherham United picked up their second win in three games last weekend with a home win over bottom of the table Hereford.

Lewis Grabban scored the only goal in the game and moved his total, in league and cup, to 19 goals this season.

Without Grabban the Millers would have struggled a lot more than they have done this season.

His goal tally has helped the team win a large amount of the points they have this season.

The closest competition to Grabban’s goal tally is Alex Revell who has scored ten goals, half that of the top scorer.

The lack of two strong goal scorers is why the Millers sit nine points away from the play-offs rather than being firmly inside the top seven.

After the win on Saturday Caretaker manager Darren Patterson said: “We bossed the game from start to finish.”

“I thought we started excellently. You couldn’t ask for a better start and really, in the first 15 minutes, we should have been two or three up.”

“We feel we should be scoring from them (corners). The deliveries are first class, they’re just begging to be attacked.”

His side were dominant all the way through and created more chances than they have done in many of the games this season. But the problem is that they weren’t able to convert the chances.

Shots flew over, wide and harmlessly into the away goalkeeper’s arms. He should be being tested with almost every shot.

The game could easily have been won by four or five goals. There were enough chances from quality deliveries into the box. The forwards did not manage to convert the chances.

While it is important for the strikers to get the service they need to make the most of the chances they are getting, if they don’t then they can’t complain when the service isn’t there.

For the side to be successful next season the club need to be looking for other attacking options.

There needs to be two or three players who are scoring over ten goals a season for the team to realistically have a chance of being promoted rather than just one exceptional player.
