The 2-0 win over second-from-bottom Goole, who finished with 10 men after a late red card, took Worksop up to fifth place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division — with four games in hand on the leaders.

Denton said: “Our aim is to win the game, which we have done.

“I thought they (Goole) looked a better side than when we played them on the opening day.

“They were more organised and had a few new players.”

Denton thought the Tigers had played better this season, but said he thought if the Tigers could get in front they would score further goals.

He added: “In fairness a 2-0 scoreline is probably an honest reflection of the game.

“Our lads dug in and showed resilience in what we wanted to do.

“Yes we were quite direct, but I felt that worked and we came off the pitch with three points, which is always the focus.”

Two pieces of individual quality won the points.

In the seventh minute Sykes flicked the ball over his marker on the edge of the box and volleyed into the corner.

Then in the final minute substitute Brunt went through on goal as Goole pushed for an equaliser, rounded the keeper and clinched victory.

Tigers keeper Dave Reay made several good saves as the home side gained their second successive league clean sheet.
