Owls fans column: Time for Sheffield Wednesday to make the most of what they’ve got

It seems like a while ago that Sheffield Wednesday were fancied for the play-offs. People started to look at us again like we were desirable. The dark horses of this year’s Championship.

We’ve gone back to feeling frumpy again. The start of the season was like gluing on some false eyelashes, putting on a pair of high heels and squeezing into some high waisted control knickers. The illusion of loveliness was only superficial. When we took off the squeezy in pants all the lumps and bumps were plain for all to see. It reduced our ability to score.

For the rest of the season we may need to rely on our inner self-esteem as confidence boosting signings might not be option.

Milan Mandaric is unlikely to fund more signings without a serious hint of a takeover. Yet another rumour surfaced this week from an Italian paper that Sampdoria’s owner Massimo Ferrero may become a suitor. The rumour is unsubstantiated so don’t expect Ferrero to be ‘really spoiling us’ anytime soon.

Our circumstances mean we have to carry on and hope we don’t lose prize assets in the January transfer window. I’d be very surprised if another club doesn’t come to take away our weekly boost of self-esteem, Keiren Westwood.

Is it time we started to look to the development squad? Defender Matt Young made the bench for Tuesday’s game against Bournemouth and Rafa Floro has been gaining momentum. Ryan Meadows and Paul Corry have also been creating and scoring for the Under-21’s.

We have to make the most of what we’ve got and get that confidence back if we’re going to avoid dropping further down the league and losing what made us attractive in the first place.
