New season of youth football kicks off

In the U10s League Gainsborough Trinity had a surprise 11-0 home win over Marshalls, while Misterton also had a good home victory as they defeated Ordsall Rangers 2-1, and Forrest Rangers made the journey to Blyth worthwhile with a 3-1 win.

In the U9s League Jack Wardle hit six as Blyton beat Saxilby in a high scoring game, Blyton winning 7-6 with Jenkinson scoring their other goal.

In contrast to that game, Blyth and Babworth fought out an entertaining 0-0 draw, while Retford United had a good 5-1 win away to Forrest Rangers.

Gainsborough Trinity and Ordsall Rangers played out a superb encounter well refereed by a young official, Trinity winning 2-1 with both goals scored by B. Smith.

In the U8s League Forrest Rangers defeated Babworth Rovers 7-0 with goals from P. Hudson (four) and J. Wilson (three).

Walesby had a fine 7-0 away win at Gainsborough Trinity and Retford United also scored seven as they defeated Marshalls 7-3 in a thriller.

MARSHALLS had a tough opening fixture when they travelled to last season’s U12s champions and returned undeservedly defeated following a controversial goal, despite the best efforts of Declan Mulholland to stop the ball from crossing the line.

The home side settled the quicker as they got into their passing game but Sports worked hard to keep them out.

The tide turned as the Marshalls midfield of skipper Joe Pettit, Aidan Clover, Ryan Warriner, Ewan Miles and debutant Cameron Girven seized control with some excellent work rate and tackling.

With the wind in their favour during the first period the visitors continued to put pressure on a very stubborn home defence with Will Goddard impressing upfront.

The home keeper saved at the feet of Warriner and Pettit whilst Goddard, Clover and Pettit all went close from distance.

Spencer Robson marshalled Sports back line with some excellent talking as alongside Tom Wood, Corey Holt and Joe Tennyson they restricted their hosts to only chance in the first 20 minutes.

Fortunately Mulholland showed his full ability as he stood up to the advancing forward to save with his legs deflecting the ball for a corner.

Marshalls forced a series of corners and the home ‘keeper had to make several saves from Goddard and a fine hand from the ‘keeper prevented Warriner from tapping home.

Against the run of play Bottesford broke the deadlock as a shot from the edge of the box took a deflection leaving Mulholland stranded.

As the ball came back off his far post it spun towards the goal and in spite of his scrambled attempt the ball was judged to have crossed the line.

Bradley Shaw and Simon Hooton replaced Girven and Warriner respectively in the midfield as the second half was more even.

The home side did manage to create more in the final third but Mulholland was rarely troubled as any crosses were comfortably dealt with.

At the other end the ‘keeper saved from Pettit and Clover again had an effort blocked on the line.

TRINITY U14s, captained by Cieron Jenkins, started their Division One campaign the brighter of the two teams, but a strong Colts back four gave Trinity forwards Brandon Scrimshaw and Corey Drummond very few chances and this resulted in a 0-0 scoreline at half-time.

Trinity started the second half strong and soon had Epworth on the back foot with an opener from Scrimshaw. Trinity’s centre midfield duo Alex Bradley and Mark Raseborough started winning the midfield battle and with Trinity’s back four holding strong there were soon further goals from Scrimshaw, Alex and Matthew Dowel, followed by a consolation goal for Epworth.

WITH the strong wind behind them All Stars took only eight minutes to register their first goal of the season when a through ball enabled Harry Turner to score his first goal for the club.

The second came from James Green, the third from a high ball into the box slotted home by Thomas Dunderdale and the fourth and goal of the day came from Thomas Dunderdale with a fine strike from outside the box giving the keeper no chance.

Marshalls kept up the pressure before half-time with a well worked goal, but it was short-lived as the All Stars scored again with Bradley Hardy finishing in fine style to make it 5-1 at half-time.

Kicking into the wind, All Stars came under pressure from Marshalls in the first 10 minutes with a finely worked goal from the home side to make it 5-2.

All Stars’ sixth goal came from Thomas Dunderdale and goal number seven came from the best move of the match with Bradley Hardy linking up well and firing the ball across the box which found the feet of James Taylor coming in to slot the past the keeper.

All stars looking very settled and there was some fine defending from Owen Forrest, Dan Rawlings, and Jack Parsons, David McMillan and Neil East also contributing to some of the well-worked goals. Last two goals of the game came from Thomas Dunderdale.
