Metts blasts those who have written Tigers off

The striker, who netted 23 goals for Tigers last season, has re-signed for another term, as club captain.

Speaking to the Guardian, the former Gainsborough frontman rounded on those who had written Worksop off over the club’s budget cuts.

“People are writing us off already for next season, which is strange, given the players we’ve kept and those we’re trying to bring in,” he said.

“A big fuss has been made about budget cuts, but it’s not as bad as people make out.”

“You can’t write off young players who are hungry and want to do well and prove people wrong, it’s a dangerous combination.”

Mettam was the first player signed by new Worksop manager Mark Shaw, and although he could have moved elsewhere for a better deal, the 26-year-old was only too happy to stay.

“It was a bit of a no brainer for me,” he said.

“It’s all about enjoyment and being happy, and I’ve had a great time at Worksop.”

“The fans seemed to want me to stay, the chairman and manager were keen to keep me here.”

“There was a few of us offered deals and people were waiting to see what was going on, it needed someone to be the first to commit.”

And his loyalty has been rewarded with the captain’s armband, something he’s never worn in his career.

“Mark said my leadership skills and enthusiasm would mean the younger lads would see me as a leader on the pitch.”

“Some people see me as aggressive, but it’s just a will to win, I have a burning desire to win whether it’s in training five-a-side or in a match.”

Joining Mettam in re-signing are fellow striker Tom Denton and left-back Phil Roe, and he’s delighted to play alongside them both once more.

“Playing with Dents brought a big improvement in my game last season, what he does for me is second to none.”

“And Roey is one of the best left-backs I’ve played with, good in the air for his size, quality on the ball and brave in the tackle.”
