McMenemy scores five against old team

RETURNING to haunt his old team, McMenemy showed no sign of mercy as he scored all five of his Trinity’s goals including a devastating 10-minute display in the second half.

With circumstances causing this local clash to be played on Roses, Marshalls lined up with the same eleven that had started their first match of the season in the away defeat to Bottesford Intech the previous week.

The first period proved to be a very even affair with Marshalls creating the better chances as Will Goddard, Ryan Warriner and Joe Pettit went close.

Ewan Miles and Warriner proved constant threats in the wide areas ably supported by the tireless running from Goddard.

At the other end Declan Mulholland had to be alert to thwart any danger of his goal being breached with some brave claims at the feet of the attacking forwards.

With the back four of Joe Tennyson, Tom Wood, Spencer Robson and Corey Holt defending well, Sports continued to play the better football.

An unpunished late tackle forced Cameron Girven to be carried off for immediate hospital treatment, later returning on crutches to support his team. This released Simon Hooton into the midfield alongside Pettit and Aidan Clover.

With half-time approaching a corner from Trinity was not cleared and following a goalmouth scramble the shot was blocked on the line by the arm of Pettit who knew little about the effort as it came through the crowd at pace.

From the resulting spot kick the home side took the advantage with a very precise finish into the bottom corner leaving Mulholland with no chance.

Bradley Shaw replaced Warriner at the break as Marshalls started the half in search of the equaliser and but for a good save from the home ‘keeper to deny Pettit the scores would have been level.

Marshalls continued to push forward but the Trinity defence remained solid with some excellent tackling. Josh Johnson replaced Hooton before the match was then taken out of Sports reach as four well-taken goals in 10 minutes settled the contest.

Mulholland was left frustrated as he was unable to keep out these efforts but he produced three further excellent saves to deny his former teammate.

Robson and Goddard swapped positions as Marshalls continued to battle on in search of their first goal of the season.

Following one good run down the right Robson gave a warning to his intent as moments later he beat two men before cutting in to cross for Miles to tap home from two yards out.

It was little consolation for a despondent Marshalls team which had been in the match for long periods.

They travel to Brigg Town this weekend in the Cobweb/Crystal Division.
