Mark Shaw adamant that Worksop Town can still win the league after Tadcaster Albion defeat

While he was disappointed to lose by such a one-sided scoreline, he thought his players stuck to their game plan well, and were simply undone by a failure to be as clinical as the hosts.

“You have to give them (Tadcaster) credit, they’ve taken their chances fantastically,” he said.

“I thought they got through the middle of us too easily for my liking.

“But I think both times when they scored their first two we were in control of the game.

“We score in the first half and then they get it through the middle of us and score, so I’m disappointed with that.

“We got ourselves in, a ball is flashed across goal and then Julian has a header to score and then they go down the side and go 2-1 up.”

He admitted it was a tough loss to take, but insisted it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

“It hurts, but I thought our game plan worked superbly, Tom Elliott, Steve Woolley and Alex Nightingale were a threat throughout and we had enough chances to put them to bed,” he said.

“I think it was an even game, even if the scoreline probably reflects that we had a bit of a hammering.

“I thought Lawrence Gorman had a great game, Callum Harrison had a good game in midfield.

“It’s a bit deflating, they’ve beaten us three times, and today I don’t think they were all that better than us.”

And the result doesn’t mean the end of Worksop’s participation in the NCEL title race.

“The league hasn’t been won or lost today, we can still win the league,” he said.

“My message to the players and supporters is that we need to keep putting results together, we can’t drop as many, it’s going to be tight up there, but we’re still top and the season is not done and dusted.”

The manager paid tribute to a large travelling support who made it sound like a home game all afternoon at Selby.

“They were superb, singing all afternoon, they were as entertaining as the game.

“They make us feel like we’re part of a proper club, it’s just a shame we haven’t got the result they came for.”
