It also spelled heartbreak for Romans, who would have lifted the silverware in the Worksop Sunday League

In one of the final games of the season, Shireoaks needed a victory at Worksop Magpies to be crowned champions and deprive Romans.

A larger-than-normal crowd at Manton Sports for the decider was boosted by Romans supporters, who were willing on the Magpies to claim a draw or win that would have meant their side were champions.

The game started brightly for both sides with tackles flying in and players swapping options regularly.

Magpies opened the scoring with a fine header half way through the first half, which brought a loud cheer from the Romans supporters.

At that stage Shireoaks seemed to be misfiring and out of rhythm.

A number of chances came and went for both sides, notably for Ben Lee who failed to increase Magpies’ lead.

The home side led 1-0 at the break and were in the ascendancy.

The second half followed a similar path to the first.

Magpies were combative in the middle of the park and played well on the break.

Shireoaks gambled early in the second period by ringing the changes.

As the game reached the final quarter they managed to get back into the contest with a scrambled equaliser from Wood.

As the showdown entered the closing seconds, however, the title looked to be going to FC Romans.

But with the last kick of the game Wood scored his second with a fine volley that gave keeper Kenan Kirk no chance.
