Twenty-two-year-old Ben Hallam played for Shaw at Shirebrook, and joined Worksop Town on Wednesday night.

He began his career at Hull City, graduating from the youth team to the professional ranks, but after failing to win a contract extension, joined North Ferriby United.

After 18 months at Grange Lane, with limited opportunies due to the form of Steve Wilson, he made a move to Frickley Athletic, with Adam Nicklin going the other way.

A spell at Arnold Town followed, before Shaw brought him to Shirebrook Town.

Shaw says the 6ft 3ins stopper is good enough for the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

“Last year Ben was definitely playing below his level.”

“I don’t think a lot of managers look at divisions below for players because they don’t believe the have the ability to play at this level.”

“I think I was lucky to keep him last year.”

“His potential to become a high quality goalkeeper is definitely there.”

The manager revealed that Hallam was at a low ebb before he moved to Shirebrook Town.

“I found him with his love lost a little bit for the game,” he said.

“I think a lot of these young players need direction and need arm around them to get them to do what is needed.”

“He is a very good keeper, part of the building process and fits in with the idea of having young players for the future.”

“I think Ben will become a player that fans like to see keeping clean sheets.”

“He has a very good education from Hull City and has experience at this level.”
