Gung-ho Worksop Town let lead slip in injury-time

Manager Ryan Hindley was left frustrated with his Worksop Town side's reckless mindset as they conceded two late goals to throw away two points in an eight-goal thriller with Liversedge.

“We have been moaning recently about not scoring enough goals, but we have scored four and could have probably had 44,” said Hindley.

“We have defended really well in the last two games but we got caught out by pace and the most frustrating thing for me is being 4-2 up and trying to get a fifth by having the wind in our sails, when really we should be shutting up shop.

“We have been reckless with our game management.”

Mitch Husbands opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a scruffy finish from close range following a free-kick and the Tigers’ lead was doubled through an own goal ten minutes later.

Three minutes after that former Tiger Rhys Davies skipped into the box and executed a fine finish with the outside of his foot to pull a goal back.

Micah Bishop put Worksop 3-1 up after the hour mark, Liversedges’ Walton made it 3-2 before substitute Ash Burbeary scored a fabulous volley with his first touch to seemingly win the game for the Tigers with seven minutes remaining.

But a powerful Rhys Davies penalty with four minutes to go made it 4-3 and deep into stoppage time Walton bagged his second and Liversedge’s equaliser to earn a share of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division spoils.

The Tigers’ players fell to their knees after the late equaliser and Hindley was asked how dejected the dressing room was afterwards.

“Yes they are disappointed,” he said. “Disappointed when it’s not a penalty for Liversedge, but the players know they should have taken their chances and know they should have defended better.

“I felt that with the experience we had on the field we should have been able to see the game out and win it comfortably.

“Credit though to Liversedge as they never stopped for 90 minutes and I’m sure it was a great game for the neutral.

“There are lots of positives for me to take and we are playing better, I just don’t know what I need to do to get a win at the moment.

“I never feel comfortable when we are in the lead. We have dropped two points by being a little bit too gung-ho and we need to learn our lessons.”
