Duo want top 10 finish and a trophy

Assistant manager Dave Frecklington (pictured) told the Guardian after Wednesday’s quarter-final win over Staveley Miners Welfare that he had tasted cup success before and wanted more of it with the Sandy Lane outfit.

“We won the Lincs Senior last year with Stamford, away at Boston United in the Conference North, and it’s always nice to finish with a final,” he said.

“If we can finish top 10 - when we came into the club we were third bottom - so if we finish top 10 and at Hillsborough for a cup final, that would make it a decent season for us.”

Frecklington was pleased for winger Lee Beeson who finally found the net for Tigers, and Jamie Jackson who ended his goal drought.

He also conceded that another attacker, Massiah McDonald, was suffering from a dip in form.

“We take a bit of confidence from the win, and it was nice to see Lee Beeson on the scoresheet for the first time at the club, and Jamie Jackson back scoring. It was a pleasing night.”

“Massiah is going through one of those spells at the minute. He’s got undoubted quality, I played with him and against him a few years ago when he was a young boy, and we’ve tied him down to a contract because we know the potential he’s got - but he needs that goal.”

He vowed that, although the play-offs are now unobtainable for the club, no one would be allowed to coast until the end of the season, he and manager Simon Clark expect performances to improve.

“We’re going to keep on (McDonald’s) case, we’ve told Jamie that and we’ve told all the players that, we’ll keep on at them all the time until they’re doing it every week.”

“Whether players are on contract or not, we will get people in to replace the players who aren’t doing it because we want to be successful, the club wants to be successful and we can’t carry any passengers.”

“We try to instill in the players before every game, you turn up and work hard and more often that not if you match the opponents’ workrate you win the game.”

“I thought on Saturday against Northwich we were superb because we matched them for workrate and on another day we probably win the game 4-1 or 5-1.”

Frecklington revealed that centre-half James Cotterill has a 70 per cent chance of featuring in Saturday’s match at Chasetown, but was full of praise for full-back Chris Wood who has deputised for the last two games.

“I think Woody has been superb at centre-half,” he said.

“He epitomises what we’re all about, we can play him at left-back, right-back or centre-half and there was no need to turn to Cotty at all (for Staveley).”

Craig King was hauled off after just half an hour on Wednesday night, after suffering from a sickness bug.

Frecklington added: “I hope he was sick, after that first half performance.”

“He’s complained to the gaffer that he’s not been very well the last few days, but he said he was fit - until he started playing again and his stomach started turning, so we’ve taken him off early doors.”
